Star Butterfly is one of the main protagonists of her eponymous show Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
Background[edit | edit source]
Star Butterfly is the heir to the royal throne in Mewni, a dimension that looks like it's straight out of a fairy-tale. On her 14th birthday, Star received the Royal Magic Wand as tradition for heirs to the throne, however after setting the whole kingdom on fire because of her inept skills, she is forcefully sent to Earth where she would learn to harness her power. On Earth, she meets her host family Marco Diaz, who, initially turned off by her cheerfulness and overall craziness, almost immediately becomes one of her closest friend and ally. They have many adventures both on Earth and in Mewni, defending the magic wand from Ludo and his army, who wants to use the wand for devious purposes. Although they succeed most of the time, at the end of the first season Star was forced to destroy her wand in order to save Marco from a reptile-like villain named Toffee, who uses it to control Ludo's body in Season 2 and nearly destroyed all of Mewni's magic. This forced Star to return and defeat him in Season 3, while finally mastering her magic powers.
Around the same time, Star's seventh great-grandmother Eclipsa breaks free from her ice prison as a result of Toffee's invasion, and is initially regarded by everyone as a vigilante because of her past. Star was able to warm up with her, and the two became close, however, as everyone else refuses to trust her, Eclipsa was forced to participate in a trial, where it was revealed that Star was not actually royalty, but rather a part of a scandal where Eclipsa's lineage was erased and replaced with a peasant. This caused Star to help Eclipsa escape, where they try to stop Eclipsa's daughter Meteora, who was revealed to be still alive and had severely wounded Star's mother, who was forced to retreat into the Realm of Magic to heal, losing her memory in the process and making Star the de facto queen of Mewni. Although Star was able to deal devastating blows to Meteora, Eclipsa eventually was able to revert Meteora back into a baby. Star than gives the wand to Eclipsa, believing that she was the rightful queen of Mewni. She has been living with Eclipsa as of Season 4, trying to help Eclipsa fit in to her role.
Star's main choice of weapon is her magic wand during the first three seasons, which she was able to master as the series went on. However, she is also highly adept at physical combat, a trait that was inherited from her father, and is also known to use innate magic, or magic without the wand, which is her main choice of fighting during Season 4. During Season 3, she is also shown to have the ability to transform into her Mewberty form, a form where all of her attacks are significantly increased, while also giving her the ability to fly. This form is presumably gone by Season 4, as she had handed the throne over to Eclipsa.
However, adjusting to the new rules was not easy, as now monsters and Mewmans were forced to live together, plus the general unpopularity of Eclipsa as queen. After Queen Moon abdicates the throne, Star stays with Eclipsa and tries to get everything back to normal. Although they eventually do, with Mewni embracing the release of Eclipsa's monster husband, Queen Moon then leads a rebellion with Solarian warriors, which ends up backfiring on everyone, as the only thing the warriors wanted to do were to exterminate all monsters. This forced Star and her family to destroy magic, disabling the Solarian warriors and causing Mewni to merge with Earth.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Star's moveset is mostly based off of her superior air game, being able to dish out a lot of damage thanks to their low ending lag. All of her aerials are able to combo into each other from low to mid percents, and most of them are safe on shield, allowing Star to have an advantage in the neutral while in the air. Her back air is also one of the best in the game, and all of her down aerial hits save for the third one are really useful for setting up tech chases. However, her best aerial has to be her forward air, which can pressure the opponent's shield and even kill at realistic percents. All of this is alleviated by her floaty nature, which prevents her from being juggled while in the air.
Her specials also give her access to great projectiles. Dagger Crystal Heart Attack can be used to keep opponents away, and Narwhal Blast allows for a multitude of setups, or can straight out KO the opponent when sweetspotted. Her most useful special, however, are her Laser Puppies, which can not only be used to set up combos, but can be a very effective edgeguarding tool.
However, Star is held back by her ground game, where she is burdened by high ending lag through most of her moves, and having only two reliable kill moves in the form of forward smash and up tilt, however the former can be avoided by crouching while the latter only kills at the sweetspot. Furthermore, her mobility on the ground is noticeably slower than in the air; this, combined with moves that are not safe on shield, gives her a rather weak ground game compared to other characters. Finally, while her throws are useful for setting up combos or edgeguarding situation, it's held back by it's short range, and all of them cannot kill save for back throw, which can only kill at medium-high percents.
Overall, Star has potentially the best air game in the entire game, where she is guarantee to deal a blow to the opponent. However, on the ground Star has to be played much safer than in the air because of her weaknesses.
Aesthetics[edit | edit source]
- Star's appearance originates from her outfit Season 2 onwards.
- Star's wand appearance is based off of its appearance in Season 3.
- The events of Season 4 and the finale are completely ignored/retconned. Star still has and uses magic.
Attributes[edit | edit source]
- Her initial dash, dash, and walk speed are slightly below average, and her traction is below average
- Her air speed is one of the best in the game, however her air acceleration and fall speed are below average, making her a floaty.
- She is a middleweight
Moveset[edit | edit source]
Name | Damage | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Neutral attack | 1.1% | Emits a burst of innate magic from her hand, in a similar vein to Zelda. Good for shield pressure but punishable if whiffed. | ||
Forward tilt | 8% | Jabs forward while emitting magic from the wand. Great shield poker but its high ending lag disallow followups. | ||
Up tilt | 8% (sweetspot), 5% (everywhere else) | Creates a rainbow from one side to another. There's a sweetspot at the peak of the rainbow that can KO middleweights starting at 143%. The rest of the move can be used as a combo extender, and has the least lag out of all tilts. Based off something she did in the pilot episode. | ||
Down tilt | 12% | Crouches and jabs her wand downward. Her strongest tilt in terms of damage, however has the highest amount of ending lag out of all her tilts, making it heavily punishable | ||
Dash attack | 9% | A flying kick. Has a lot of ending lag, making it punishable. | ||
Forward smash | Rainbow Fist Punch | 15% (uncharged), 25% (charged) | A fiery blast from her wand, in the shape of a fist. Deals considerable amount of knockback and is easily Star's best smash attack, KOing middleweights starting at 100%. However, the blast radius is relatively high off the ground, making it impossible for most crouching opponents to get hit. | |
Up smash | 14% (uncharged), 24% (charged) | Raises her wand above her and does a beam shot. Great anti-air, however cannot effectively KO until around 180%. Star's worst smash attack. | ||
Down smash | 14% (uncharged), 24% (charged) | Crouches around and spins the wand around her. One of Star's best out-of-shield options, although it cannot KO until around 160%. | ||
Neutral aerial | 1.5% (1st hit), 0.5% (2nd-4th hits), 2.5% (final hit) | Holds the wand towards her chest and emits light beams. One of Star's best out-of-shield options, and is safe on shield. Can combo into itself at early percents and any aerial at mid to high percents. The first four hits have a drag-down effect. | ||
Forward aerial | Shooting Star Explosion | 2.5% (1st-2nd hit), 3% (final hit) | Shoots stars out of her wand. Great for pressuring shields and has little landing and ending lag, making it one of her best tools for edgeguarding. Can KO middleweights at 140%. | |
Back aerial | 7% | Punches backwards and releases innate magic from her hands. Her strongest aerial, capable of KOing at 100%. However, it has the most ending lag out of all of her moves. | ||
Up aerial | 2% (1st-3rd hit), 3% (4th hit) | Creates a rainbow above her head, in a similar fashion to Peach. The rainbow has a lasting hitbox and is disjointed, making it Star's best juggling tool. However, it cannot KO at realistic percents. | ||
Down aerial | 1.5% (all 5 hits) | Creates an arc using her feet. All hits spike, however only the third one is truly effective at KOing opponents at realistic percents, with the other hits only dealing very minimal knockback. Can be used to set up tech chases and reads. | ||
Grab | — | Captures the opponent using her wand | ||
Pummel | 0.5% | A blast of energy from her wand. A medium-speed pummel. | ||
Forward throw | 8% | Swings the opponent in front of her. Can lead into a dash attack at low percents, but is otherwise used to set up an edgeguard. | ||
Back throw | 10% | Slams the opponent behind her. Can KO at around 140%. | ||
Up throw | 10% | Shoots the opponent upward. Star's best combo throw, and can lead to a plethora of combos up to high percents. Cannot KO at realistic percents. | ||
Down throw | 2% (1st-4th hits), 3.5% (5th hit) | Uses innate magic to shock the opponent downward before launching them away. A good mixup that can lead into a neutral air or forward air at low to mid percents. Cannot KO at realistic percents. | ||
Floor attack (front) | 9% | Kick behind her while swinging her wand in front of her. | ||
Floor attack (back) | 9% | Kick behind her while swinging her wand in front of her. | ||
Floor attack (trip) | 9% | Kick behind her while swinging her wand in front of her. | ||
Edge attack (fast) | 9% | Jabs the wand forward. | ||
Edge attack (slow) | 9% | Jabs the wand forward. | ||
Neutral special | Dagger Crystal Heart Attack | 1.5% (hearts) | Shoots a total of five hearts out of her wand. Can be angled in any direction, and travels across the entire stage. A solid projectile that deals minor knockback, but can lock the opponent. Generally used to increase the percentage of the opponent, although it can also be used to gimp recoveries. | |
Side special | Narwhal Blast | 5% (body), 15% (horn) | Shoots out a narwhal. While the projectile doesn't travel far, it has a huge body hitbox. It also has a sweetspot at its horn that can KO middleweights at around 100%. The sourspot, which is the rest of the body, can be used to set up aerial combos. | |
Up special | Mewberty Wings | 0% | Produces wings from her back and flies upwards. Has great vertical distance and average horizontal distance. The startup of this move has a windbox where the wing is being produced, pushing opponents slightly backwards. | |
Down special | Laser Puppies | 3% (puppies), 5% (lasers) | Creates a laser puppy that can be thrown around like an item. The puppies spontaneously shoot lasers out of their eyes, stunning the opponent. The puppies themselves deal minor knockback, making it an effective edgeguarding tool. | |
Final smash | Mewberty Blast | 45% | Transforms into her Mewberty form, and releases a quick blast of yellow energy at the stage. The blast can be tilted upwards or downwards. Has the potential to KO middleweights at around 50%. |
